Plastic Storage Bins | The Dorm Room Best Friend

When you move into a dorm room, storage can be a little bit of a challenge. You don’t necessarily want to buy something that is only for your dorm room, especially since dorm rooms are different each year and you want what you get to be versitile.

In come plastic stacking drawers!!

I was a massive fan of these when I was in college and, to be honest, I still use them to this day for various things where an expensive shelving unit isn’t the move, or when I don’t know what I want yet.

College is not the time to invest in top of the line drawers. Better you get yourself some nice bed sheets and a duvet.

What would I use it for?

Whatever you want! When I was in college, I used it to store the miscellaneous items. I had a draw for snacks and food, I had a draw for additional supplies and then I had another draw for my off season or extra bed sheets.

Other people used them to store extra shoes, clothes, underwear. The limit is endless. It just depends on what other storage your university has provided.

Can I use this going forward?

Yes! This is a great option to use after you leave college. I use some of these in my apartment. They’re perfect for extra shoes, underwear, off season clothes, or other things that you can’t really figure where to put things.

It can become one of your “drawers” if you need too. You know, that drawer that has no rhyme or reason and just holds everything??

What size should I get?

You will see there’s lots of sizes – from the ones that just will hold a pair of shoes to the bigger ones that will hold a duvet. This is very personal. I’d think about what you plan to use it for in your initial purchase. And of course make sure you measure your space.

Stackable or Non-Stackable?

I’m a personal fan of stackable. What this means is that you can buy just 3, but then if you want to grow your shelves, you can buy and add more to create a larger little unit. It also means if 4 is too tall to fit under that lifted dorm bed, you can split it into two 2-drawers and still use it all!

There are a LOT of options out there but here’s a few suggestions to start you off.

Small Storage Units

These are perfect to store extra shoes and maybe some small bits and pieces as you’d need.

Stackable Storage Bins

This is a great example of some stackable storage bins that you can add more on top of or remove, depending on your space.

Collapsible, Stackable, and Storable Storage Bins

Now these are a great option to expand, they look great and when not in use they can be stored super conveniently!

Multi Drawer, Non-Stackable

This is a good solid option if you know the space you have to work with. However, whatever size you choose is the size you are stuck with since it is not stackable.

Stackable Storage Bins

Something like this would be, by far, my favorite! It’s stackable – so you can make it as high or as low as you’d like. And you can expand your collection!

You can get another kind of version of stackable shelves here as well.
