Decorating your dorm room can be such a daunting task. You only have so much space, and only so much money, to work with.
So is it worth it?
Well, if you’re a parent reading this, you shouldn’t be doing it. Or at least not all of it.
College is not supposed to feel like home. They need to have something to look forward to when they come home from break. Also it’s supposed to be a studious environment. So if you literally just pick up all their stuff and decorate their room…it’s gonna be weird, and everyone will think so, trust me on this.
Now, if you’re a college student, what do you bring?
You want to bring little things from home to make yourself comfortable.
My suggestions are things like pillows and maybe a light or a blanket to make the bed a little more comfortable. That way it brings a little bit from home and can help you adjust and be a bit more comfortable.
When you decorate, it should be the bare minimum. It should be comfortable but not so comfortable that you never want to leave your room. Because, honestly, you won’t be spending too much time in your room. You will be in class, probably studying elsewhere (as many people avoid their room to study in) or socializing out and about!
In all honesty, the fancier you make the room the more money you will be spending and a lot of the time you don’t have too much money to work with (as you are going to college, duh!).
Also think long term. Great, you moved it in and set it all up, but then at the end of the year you are going to have to move it all out!
Always remember, what you move in with will grow – you will buy bits and pieces during the year just as you naturally would and as you find a need for things. So if your car was filled going to school, then you won’t have room going home.
You don’t want to be that kid that rents a truck and everyone stares as they move out.
